BOO!

These kiddos aren't afraid of catching ghost.  Students play  "Catching Ghost", a number game that reinforces their understanding of even and odd numbers.

October Mystery Reader

I would like to thank Mrs. Loudermill, the mother of Donovan, for being our very first mystery reader!

 
Mrs. Loudermill read I Need My Monster which is one of my favorite stories to read during October. Students later captured their own monster in a jar which is a writing activity that helps students use colorful words when writing.

 

    

The kiddos also listened to this old time favorite by Eric Carle.  Then they made their very own busy spider, yikes!



 

 



 

Now I can handle these creepy crawlers.  The real ones, well not so much.

Sink or Float?

Students work together to determine if their predictions will test true.  I posed the question, "I wander what will happen if we place a solid in water?" to model how scientist ask questions.  I look forward to students asking their own questions for future lessons as they better understand this process.

 

 

Scientific Process

Students took a look at the scientific process last week.  I was excited to see how much they remembered after the quick lesson.  We will put  these skills to use next week as we continue our study of matter.

I don't know what's cuter...the way this kiddo spelled prediction or the lips, lol.

We're Batty!

Last week, we finished composing our decriptive story on bats. Students used a graphic organizer to help them include a topic sentence, two or three details, and a conclusion.  Next week, we will look closely at spiders, yikes!

Magnificent Mathematicians

Students warm up for problem solving by doing quick images which allows students to note various dot patterns.  These images help students learn the art of subtizing which is a latin word meaning "to instantly know". Subtizing allows children to develop abstract number and arithmetic strategies.



Students were shown this image for 3 seconds and then asked to record what they saw.



Mimi was able to see the whole as units of 5 and 5 which helped get to 10.



Students use base ten blocks and word problems as tools to understand mathematical concepts.

Preston uses a rekenrek which is another math tool we use to stretch our understanding

of number.

These kiddos don't give up until they have a solution which is one of our Common Core process standards.

Fun Run

Our Fun Run was a huge success!  I was so proud of my kiddos for working so hard

to get their 35 laps.  Don't forget to send your pledge money to school by Thursday, October 25.  Thanks a bunch for supporting our school!!!
